Nutrition and dental health are closely related. So having knowledge of healthy food for teeth is very important for all of us. Foods that contain no or little sugar are less acidic and are therefore healthy food for teeth. Acid-forming foods do not necessarily taste sour. Typical acid generators include sugary foods. Problems are mainly hidden sugars in ketchup, some dairy products, fruit gums and beverages.
Highly sugar- and / or carbohydrate-containing foods cause an almost explosive growth of the caries bacteria (streptococci). When converting the components containing sugar and carbohydrates, these bacteria produce an acid that attacks the molten tooth and removes important minerals from it. The longer the tooth is exposed to this acidic environment, the more the natural protective mechanism of the tooth is weakened and caries can develop.
A good protection against caries on the tooth is, therefore, prevention by proper nutrition: if possible, take only a few very sugary foods and drinks and grasp e.g. In the case of intermediate meals, to more delicate food.
Only teeth brushing is too little for healthy teeth
Our teeth are often in a miserable condition, and this starts with the children. Caries and periodontal disease can be easily and simply prevented with the right diet. Already at school, the children learn: daily brushing is one of the most important measures to protect against gum disease, but also against other health problems. It is now known that certain strains of harmful bacteria that propagate between the teeth and in the tooth pockets can also migrate into other parts of the body and can cause cardiovascular diseases. Daily brushing is a must. But an only tooth brushing is too little. A comprehensive care also includes the use of dental floss and small, narrow toothbrush, with which one can easily get into the tooth spaces.

Citrus fruits and sour food
If your teeth became yellow, you should not take too much acidic food. Reason: The acids from citrus fruits soften the molten tooth on the surface. Minerals are washed out and the molten tooth loses its thickness. If the protective layer of the melt has disappeared, the acids also attack the dentin or the synovial bone. This can cause your teeth to react very sensitively to heat or cold. If you eat citrus fruits, you should pay attention to one thing: Do not brush your teeth directly after eating, so that you do not simply “brush away” your softened enamel surface.
Coffee discolored the teeth
For many people, coffee in the morning is simply a matter of getting into life. Unfortunately, the drink is also responsible for unsightly discoloration of the teeth. More specifically, the tannin are deposited on the molten tooth, which causes unsightly brown spots. Plus: The so-called coffee acid changes the PH value in the mouth. Acid foods should, therefore, be dispensed with after the enjoyment since the teeth are more sensitive.
Beware of smoothies
Smoothies are real vitamin bombs, but caution is advised: in particular classic fruit mixes have a high fruit sugar and acid content. The processing fruits include acids that descale the teeth and cause erosion damage. Teeth become sensitive and painful. But not only is the acidity of the fruits but also the fruit sugar problematic. Because the bacteria in the mouth turn the sugar into acids, so that in the worst case, carries can arise.

Tea causes stains

The only difference to the coffee: the discoloration varies. If you prefer green tea, you must count on a gray coloring of your teeth, while black tea leads to yellowish deposits. Experts recommend adding black or green tea, as this can prevent the appearance of unsightly spots.
Spinach is not only healthy
Spinach has a great importance for your health as it contains carotene and many minerals, including calcium and potassium. For the teeth, the green leafy vegetables are not the best choice. Why? Oxalic acid and calcium are present in the spinach, and calcium oxalate is combined in the oral cavity with the insoluble salt. The latter causes the feeling of dull teeth, which in turn means that the tooth melt has become temporarily more sensitive. So do not clean your teeth immediately after eating, so that it is not attacked any further. Incidentally, oxalic acid is also found in rhubarb, chard, and sorrel.
Acetic acid attacks teeth
A glass of wine should be good for your health, but bad for your teeth. The acidity of tartaric acid is used to attack the tooth – and the well-known tannin make your teeth discolor. One thing, however, leaves a sigh of relief: experts have found that red wine is a good remedy in the fight against bacteria in the mouth. Well then cheers!!!
The worst enemies for our teeth are chocolate candy, lollipop sweets, chips, salt biscuits, cornflakes, white bread and white biscuits. All these are food with so-called empty and fast carbohydrates. They attack the teeth directly because they are converted into sugar by the caries bacteria in wind ropes. And the sugar immediately begins to get drunk. Sweet food and carbohydrates from white flour cause the formation of plaque and tooth-destroying acids, the basis for scalp and caries.
Our main problem is: We eat too soft things. We chew too little. This produces less saliva in the mouth. This again has the effect that the pre-digestion of the food is not optimal. In addition, there is no self-cleaning of the teeth.
All foodstuffs that form acid are basically tooth-defenses. These include all fruit, vinegar, fruit juices, cola drinks, wine, sparkling wine, champagne. Among the fruit juices is also the orange juice, which so many like to drink. Particularly dangerous are limo drinks, which are additionally added citric acid to make them taste better. This will seriously jeopardize the molten tooth because the calcium dissolves immediately. The tooth is deprived of its most important mineral.

Green tea as an assistant
Let us turn to the friends of the teeth among the food. And green tea plays a very important role. Its protective polyphenol substances, a very valuable form of bio-active substances, fulfill two tasks in the oral cavity that are good for our teeth. Firstly, these secondary phytonutrients in the green tea change the foodstuffs in the mouth biochemically in such a way that the caries bacteria no longer have joy; they cannot and do not want to use them anymore. This deprives them of their basis and cannot cause any harm in the mouth. And secondly, the active ingredients of the green tea control those micro-organisms between the teeth, which cause the mouth odor and which are used for the formation of tartar. One thing is logical: the green tea should be lukewarm and above all unsweetened. If you touch the slightest trace of sugar or honey in the green tea, the protective measures for our teeth do not work.
The impact of green tea is demonstrated by a study of schoolchildren carried out a few years ago at the University of Paris. It is found that only a protection against caries is given when the children took thoroughly rinse with green tea after the meal to avoid the oral cavity. The tea does not have to be drunk at all. Alone rinsing is enough.
Positive: Vegetables and kitchen spices
There are also a number of vegetable varieties that do the teeth particularly well. These include raw peppers and raw carrots. If these vegetables are chewed intensively, the gums are massaged, the interdental spaces are cleaned. The vitamin A with the beta-carotene in the carrot strengthens the immune power in the oral mucous membranes, which can combat harmful bacteria better. The vitamin C in the chilies strengthens the gums. Our teeth may very well like raw celery root. The active ingredients in this tuber create a basic milieu in the saliva of the mouth. And the caries bacteria do not like it.
There are also popular kitchen spices that protect our teeth from diseases. This includes, for example, our native onion. But it too must be eaten raw. The sulfur compounds in the onion fight very successfully harmful bacteria in the mouth. As more and more Asian kitchen specialties are consumed here, it is not without interest that the extra-sharp Japanese horseradish with the name Wasabi – like the green tea – also eliminates the caries bacteria.
The ideal tooth protection: Cheese
The most valuable and important healthy food for teeth to protecting our teeth is the cheese, especially when it is consumed at the end of a meal. Again, several factors play hand in hand. First, fat, as it contains the cheese, is a good caries protection. Second, the cheese supplies the teeth with the precious mineral calcium. One must imagine this: As soon as someone enjoys cheese and the cheese in the mouth is pre – digested with the saliva, casein proteins dissolve from the cheese mass and attach themselves as a protective film to the tooth melt. They prevent acids from the food from attacking the enamel and damaging it. This is why it is so important to end the meal with a piece of cheese. This eliminates the aggressive acids in the oral cavity.
However, the cheese still has a third advantage for our teeth: Special milk proteins prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the dental plaque, from which the hard tooth becomes. Important for all the tooth-protecting factors in the cheese: They only come into their own when chewing well and taking their time.
More tips for healthy teeth
Food containing fluoride Food containing fluoride supports the formation of molten teeth and ensures strength. Fluoride-rich mineral water, for example, contains more than 0.7 mg of fluoride per liter. Freshly boiled black tea can even have a fluoride content of over 1 mg per liter. Also fluoridated food salt is a recommended fluoride supplier.
Foods containing sweeteners such as sugar substitutes and sugar substitutes have lower sugar content. Since caries mainly occurs when sugar is absorbed throughout the day in many smaller portions, candies and drinks with sugar substitutes are sensible. The most effective way to reduce your caries risk is by avoiding sugar-containing intermediate meals.

However, not only the acids of caries bacteria present a risk to our dental health and promote caries. Many foods, e.g. some fruit species, contain valuable vitamins as well as fruit acids. These acids directly attack and weaken the molten tooth. The acids in the food soften the molten tooth, which can then be removed more easily when brushing the teeth. After the enjoyment of such foods, the molten tooth needs some time to stabilize again.
Tip: Do not eat acidic food and drinks throughout the day and wait at least 30 minutes after brushing your teeth and obviously brush properly. From a nutritional point of view, fruit is healthy.
